GLORIES OF CHARITY

The art of giving is all about charity done without expecting anything in return. This charity is mainly to create a world of abundance and sustainability for people who are less fortunate than us. Donation or the act of giving is of tremendous importance. Vedic scriptures emphasize the charitable acts done for the greater good of the society. Charity or act of giving helps one to get rid of miseries of material life and attain peace of mind, transcendental joy, which is essential for attaining salvation.

Srila Prabhupada says, "devotional service has no material cause, and therefore it cannot be checked by any material circumstances".

Lord Sri Krishna says in the Gita "Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness." (BG 17.20)

Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up but should be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, charity and penance purify even the great souls. (BG 18.5)

sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo
yato bhaktir adhokṣaje
ahaituky apratihatā
yayātmā suprasīdati

The supreme occupation (dharma) for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self.

Shrimad Bhagavatam 1.2.6
